EU Could Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Official Says

The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the United States against five Europeans involved in combating online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions targeted individuals who have been central to efforts to introduce laws regulating American tech companies.

“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state online. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in condemning the move.

The bans were enacted this week on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, along with four activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

The DSA is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders contend the rules are essential to combat hate speech and falsehoods.

This row risks becoming a facet of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict involving the current US administration and Europe.
