Conservative reactions to the limited disclosure of files involving the Epstein case have been sharply divided, with some backers of the former Trump administration pointing out the prominent presence of Bill Clinton and other Democratic figures in images, while different voices lamented how heavy censorship portray former President Trump and GOP members in a negative light.
Justice Department Defends Redactions with Strong Hyperbole
Administration officials defended the redactions with intense hyperbole. “At no point in American history has a Commander-in-Chief or the Justice Department been this open with the public about such a delicate legal matter,” stated a senior Justice official Todd Blanche, who issued a detailed letter describing the censorship procedure.
Questions Prompted by Blacked-Out Sections
While the former president's identity and image appear in some of the materials, the extensive black blocks prompt serious questions about the information may be hidden behind them. Some Republicans swiftly demanded increased transparency.
“The public are raging and walking away,” posted Georgia Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene.
In a social media post, Republican Congressman Thomas Massie said the redactions break the statute, and implied that a future Congress may move to remove the Attorney General, Pam Bondi, for that violation. “Unfortunately, today’s document release egregiously fails to adhere to both the spirit and the letter of the law,” he continued.
A Faction of Rightwing Figures Swing In Support of the Release
However, some conservative commentators and former President allies swung firmly in support of the administration.
The disclosed materials—originating from a justice department led by close Trump ally Pam Bondi—includes hundreds of documents that are completely censored, and numerous of the individuals depicted in pictures have their identities blacked out.
Yet a few do not, featuring prominent individuals like Clinton, pop singer Michael Jackson, and academic Noam Chomsky. The inclusion of the former president, especially, allowed some conservative figures to go on the attack.
“This is quite ironic how the political left wrongly claimed Donald Trump of being a sex offender, only for the Trump DOJ to unveil Epstein files that show Bill Clinton skinny dipping with a convicted sex offender,” wrote right-wing activist Laura Loomer.
“New documents show Bill Clinton shirtless in a jacuzzi with a woman that is other than his spouse Hillary Clinton,” wrote attorney Rogan O’Handley. “There is only one reason Epstein would photograph a Commander-in-Chief with a girl in a jacuzzi: Leverage.”
Clinton Campaign Releases Response
Bill Clinton has consistently said he was aware of zero criminal actions by Epstein and has not been accused to have engaged in any wrongdoing. “The White House hasn’t been concealing these documents for an extended period only to release them at the last minute on a weekend to protect Bill Clinton,” his spokesperson Angel Ureña stated in a statement.
“The release is about protecting themselves from what comes next, or from what they will try and conceal permanently. So they can release as many grainy 20-plus-year-old photographs as they desire, but it is not about Bill Clinton. Not previously, never will be,” the response concluded.
Broader Conservative Comment Remains Muted
However, overall comment on the political right was relatively muted after the disclosure, especially when juxtaposed against the loud calls for action that came before the congressional vote to enact a law mandating the files' release.
Loomer, who not long ago accepted media access at the Defense Department, had been one of the loudest advocates for a full release. In February, she criticized the administration generally and Bondi in particular after a set of rightwing influencers were given physical binders of files that included no previously unseen information.
